Maryanne Shanahan is a native New Englander, originally from Lowell, MA, who lived and traveled worldwide before buying The Hawthorn Inn in November 2001. In early 2007, after six seasons as a solo innkeeper, Maryanne met Bill Amidon, and before they knew it they were planning a wedding. Married on November 10, 2007, Maryanne and Bill are a great match—their interests mesh and their skills are complimentary: a perfect partnership for the Inn.
Among the places Maryanne has called home are New York City, Chicago and Panama, Republic of Panama. Maryanne's career was varied, interesting and fun, and ranged from nursing practice and administration to publishing and editorial management, executive search, and Internet content and technology development, all in the health care field and, for the 12 years before coming to Camden, through her own consulting firm. Bill also lived in New York City—in fact, Maryanne and Bill learned when they met that they had lived in New York at the same time a block apart from one another! And they grew up in Massachusetts just 40 minutes away from one another. Bill also has lived in Turkey, where he was a school administrator for 11 years, and raised his family in Greensboro, NC. He is an artist and sculptor, has a green thumb, is a singer with a wonderful bass voice, and can do all those things around the property that Maryanne was not able to do on her own. He spent the majority of his career in funds development for non-profits.
Maryanne and Bill love the celebratory nature of the bed and breakfast business—birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, a break from routine, a romantic getaway—and want guests to thoroughly enjoy the experience. They make certain that guests feel warmly welcomed; comfortable; pampered; oriented to area activities and opportunities; and booked on tours, cruises or for dinner reservations in advance of their visit.
